Purpose of the Role


Effectively supervise and direct a team of hourly employees to ensure all electrical work is maintained to Peabody standards and MSHA regulations and manage equipment in a cost-effective manner.


Key Role Accountabilities


  • Supervise maintenance employees and perform electrical functions in an underground coal mine.
  • Prepare and submit accurate and timely electrical reports.
  • Coordinate and conduct training for safety, task and operation needs.
  • Monitor and maintain proper flow of parts and inventory.
  • Work with manufacturer’s representatives on modification and improvements of mining equipment.
  • Ensure safe work practices and regulatory compliance at all times.


Role Requirements




  • Must be a qualified MSHA electrician. (Underground low and medium voltage, surface low and medium voltage, underground/surface high voltage.)
  • Mine examiner, manager, or foreman certification is desirable.
  • Must have high safety standards for self and others.
  • Must follow company, State, and Federal plans and policies.
  • Must be willing to work on any assigned shift and on scheduled weekends, including overtime as needed.
  • Must communicate with others on shift and on adjacent shifts.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.




  • Minimum of 5 years experience performing electrical work on underground coal mining equipment. (Experience maintaining similar equipment in another field may be substituted).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisor experience.
  • Formal education in electrical subjects will be considered.


Physical Requirements


  • Must have the ability to stand for prolonged periods of time on uneven, rocky surfaces.
  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Must have the ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time.  Will be required to walk through different sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
  • Walking ability will be judged according to SCSR emergency evacuation plan required and approved by MSHA.
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA.
  • Must have the ability to bend or stoop for a full work period as a result of mine height.
  • Must have the ability to climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on and off equipment and ladders.
  • Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms and legs as well as good hand to eye coordination.
  • Must have the ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and the ability to occasionally lift items weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

In addition, individuals must meet the minimum vision and hearing requirements to fulfill a safety sensitive role:


  • At least 20/40 acuity (Snellen) in each eye with or without correction. At least 70° field of vision in horizontal meridian measured in each eye. The use of corrective lenses should be noted on the Medical Examiner's Certificate.
  • No more than 40dB average hearing loss in better ear (with or without hearing aid).
