Job Summary

Assists in performing surface and underground field surveys and data processing for the engineering, production, compliance, reclamation and environmental departments.  Develop and update mine maps.  Perform daily and weekly mine exams.


Job Description


  • Conduct daily, weekly and monthly surface and underground mine surveys for mine maps and other construction work.  Includes installation of sights for the continuous miner sections and station tags for the longwall section to insure proper direction and elevations are maintained.
  • Surface surveying tasks include stockpile surveys, site contours, subsidence surveys and miscellaneous construction activities.
  • Set aerial photo panels and perform other surveys and staking as assigned.
  • Survey reclamation regraded areas for compliance and reclamation departments and prepare monthly and annual OSM, DNR and MSHA reports.
  • Office duties include survey notes reduction, pre-survey and post-survey calculations, mine map updates, drafting computer input for surface and underground contouring, development of written survey standards and procedures, and other miscellaneous tasks.
  • Assist mining, environmental and geologic engineers with projects such as ventilation modeling and surveys, water sampling, channel sampling, etc.
  • Coordinate with mine personnel to complete survey projects.
  • Conduct mine exams, mine tours and process improvement tracking.
  • Shift work and weekend work required.


  • High level of mathematical skills including Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry.
  • Operation of both conventional and modern GPS surveying equipment
  • Proficiency using a calculator, PC Microsoft Office Software; Word, Excel and Windows.
  • Able to use AutoCAD and SurvCAD.
  • Capable of working with a minimum amount of supervision.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent safety habits.
  • Associates Degree (AAS – 2 year program) or 1 to 2 years in an equivalent position.
  • Knowledge of surveying practices, methods and techniques.
  • Colorado Fireboss Certification desirable

Physical Requirements


  • Must have the ability to stand for prolonged periods of time,
  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Must have the ability to work from elevated positions, walk/climb  up and down stairs/steps and climb on and off equipment and ladders.
  • Must have the ability to lift/raise up to 80 lbs. without mechanical assistance frequently during the course of work shift.
  • Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist movements (push, pull, twist, handle), and  have rapid reflex movements of the arms and legs and good hand to eye coordination.
  • Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, heat , cold, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high, varying degrees of ight and dark, in and around artificial light and in confined work area.
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA.
