We are currently seeking a Mining Manager at our Coppabella Moorvale Joint Venture (CMJV) – Coppabella Mine. Our CMJV mine complex consists of two open-cut mine operations located approximately 140 kilometres southwest of Mackay that produce premium low-volatile pulverized coal (LV-PCI) for export markets.

 

About the role:

Peabody are currently seeking a Mining Manager to join our opencut mine based at Coppabella Moorvale Mine Complex (CMJV).

In this high-profile role, you will work closely with the Operations Manager to lead the Mining operations team across two open cut mine sites in achieving established business and production targets in a safe, efficient and effective manner.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Champion a proactive safety culture by ensuring compliance with the site’s Safety and Health Management Plan, leading safety initiatives, and fostering open communication across all teams.
  • Lead the development, execution, and tracking of the annual Mining Business Plan, driving continuous improvement and embedding best practice operational standards.
  • Provide strategic oversight of open cut operations, including short, medium, and long term mine planning, with a focus on optimisation, cost efficiency, and sustainable production outcomes.
  • Oversee the integration and scheduling of people and equipment to align with mine planning objectives, ensuring efficient and reliable delivery of operational targets.
  • Identify operational risks and cost variances early, escalate critical issues with solutions, and implement strategies to meet or exceed physical and financial performance targets.
  • Manage departmental budgets, ensuring alignment with unit cost objectives and effective utilisation of site assets to meet production and maintenance goals.
  • Lead contractor performance within the Mining department, ensuring accountability, safety, and alignment with operational objectives.

 

The lifestyle:

This position is offered on a 9-day fortnight roster (Monday to Friday, Monday to Thursday) and supports a DIDO or FIFO lifestyle. For those seeking a more permanent base, the company is also open to providing relocation support to the Moranbah or Mackay region.

 

About you:

You are an operationally focused leader with a strong background in open cut coal mining, known for delivering results through high performing teams and driving continuous improvement on site. With a wealth of experience in open cut coal mining operations, you have developed a reputation for being hands-on, technically competent, and commercially astute.

 

You bring a blend of operational and technical services experience, allowing you to understand the full mining value chain and make confident, data-informed decisions. You have a sharp eye for cost control, scheduling, and execution but just as importantly, you know how to lead people and build a positive, safety-first culture.

 

You are ambitious and ready to take on a broader leadership role, this is more than a job for you, it's a step toward progressing into a Senior Manager role in the future with a global business like Peabody.

 

Key attributes we are looking for:

  • Proven leadership in open cut operations, ideally with experience in production and sound understanding of technical services.
  • Strong commercial acumen with skills in cost management, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Confident communicator with experience engaging senior leadership, regulators, and cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in integrated management systems and Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with mining engineering packages will be advantageous.
  • Sound understanding of coal mining legislation and risk management principles.
  • Ability to obtain or work towards a Surface Mine Managers qualification in line with the upcoming competencies and statutory qualification requirements
  • Qualifications in ICAM and Risk Assessment Facilitation (desirable).
  • Statutory qualifications such as SSE or OCE are highly regarded but not mandatory, the business will support you in obtaining them.
  • Tertiary qualifications in mining will be preferred but are not mandatory.
