About the role:

We are currently seeking a Manager of Engineering - Underground at our Francisco mine site.


Reporting to the General Manager of Mine Operations this role will be responsible directing the engineering activities at the mine site to include but not limited to, the engineering, surveying and other measures to plan control and document the extraction of underground materials and reclamation requirements at the operation.



Duties will include:

  • Supervises and performs engineering and surveying at the Mine to ensure accurate and proper procedures and measures are being utilized to measure performance of all mining and reclamation activities at the mine.
  • Responsible for ensuring that accurate weekly and monthly operating reports are compiled and submitted to the Mine Management and the Corporate Office.
  • Coordinates with Mine Management in the planning and projection of short-term mining plans and reclamation operations and submits projected production proformas.
  • Coordinates and provides input for the development of long-term mining plans and the mining/reclamation permits.
  • Provides engineering assistance to Mine Management in the planning, construction and safety plans in an underground mine and reclamation post-mining land use areas.
  • Reviews mining and reclamation operations and make recommendations to Mine Management and/or develop plans that would decrease operating costs or improve operating efficiency.
  • Reviews and monitors all mining and reclamation activities to insure compliance with State and Federal mining and reclamation laws and permits.
  • Coordinates with Mine Management in evaluating, developing and completing projects required to rectify any compliance problems found during regulatory agency's inspection.
  • May be required to act as Company's representative during inspections conducted by State and Federal reclamation inspectors.
  • Generates various reports and studies using the computer to aid in problem solving and operating cost evaluation.
  • Conducts special projects involving evaluation and/or testing of equipment or material production performance or efficiency.
  • Performs engineering studies that evaluate proposed changes in equipment, operations, mining plans or procedures or the efficiency of various mine operations.
  • Coordinates and inspects construction projects performed by either mine personnel or outside contractors to insure compliance with design plans or contract provisions.
  • Monitor employee work performance and take necessary corrective action consistent with company policy.
  • Assist in the annual budget, providing technical support for costs associated with short & long term mine plans as well as creating mine timing maps in AutoCAD





The lifestyle:

This position will work a Monday-Friday roster with every other Saturdays on 1st shift. The Saturday rotation will be balanced amongst the department. This position will based out of our Francisco mine site.



About you:

  • BS in Mining or Civil Engineering required
  • Eight years’ experience in surface and/or underground mine engineering required
  • Three years’ prior experience in a leadership role required
  • Professional Engineering certification or the ability to obtain within 1 year of employment preferred
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Carlson Software
  • Proficient in Excel including pivot tables
  • Advanced Degree in Engineering or Business Administration preferred
  • MSHA Certified Impoundment Inspector preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of underground surveying including use of surveying instruments
  • Strong working knowledge of Geology and related ground control for various geologic conditions
  • Strong working knowledge of underground mine ventilation, ventilation systems and ventilation control devices
  • Ability to obtain ventilation readings throughout the mine, monitor variances of the air readings and react to ventilation requirements
  • Ability to perform ventilation modeling using V-net software
  • Ability to perform surface surveying using GPS systems
  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations for a mine complex
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to coordinate with all levels of management, co-workers and supervisors
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to clearly communicate geologic concepts to non-technical personnel
  • Strong working knowledge of and experience in State and Federal mining, water and air regulations.


Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to, walk/climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on and off equipment and ladders
  • Must have the ability to traverse uneven and steep terrain to perform field work year round including all weather and ground conditions
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA
  • Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to  dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area
  • Must have the ability to bend or stoop for a full work period as a result of the height restrictions including rocky and uneven seam floor which can pitch steeply
  • Must be able to use a computer, communicate effectively in various forms, including by email and phone
  • Must be able to review paper and electronic documents; complete computer entry of data from paper documents
  • Must be able to find, remove and return files to/from file cabinets; discuss issues by telephone and in person
  • Must be able to operate copier, fax machine, etc.


This is a Safety Sensitive Role:
