POSITION SUMMARY:  To provide accurate and timely surveying and mapping associated with mine production, planning, permitting and reclamation to assist in achieving the Company’s safety and financial goals and objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain technical surveying instruments such as Total Station, GPS and Level instrument to accomplish the related work assignments with precision.
  • Responsible for actively performing all underground and surface surveying.
  • Perform all survey related responsibilities which include Traverses, Levels, locating utilities, etc.
  • Develop and maintain maps for mine advancement, projections, property control and permitting in AutoCAD with Carlson software.
  • Accurately perform the end-of-month calculations for the underground mined tons and the surface stockpiles utilizing basic engineering calculations and recording of mine data for production and engineering reports.
  • Demonstrate leadership by example in complying with all Company, State, and Federal policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
  • Demonstrate high safety standards and be an ambassador for “Safety:  A Way of Life” (SAWOL).
  • Willing and available to work extended hours and other duties as necessary.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Be highly self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be willing to work any shift, and on scheduled weekends.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all management levels, intercompany departments, and mine operations personnel

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Minimum 2 years Associate Degree in surveying, mining engineering technology, or civil engineering technology, or
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in underground coal mining including at least 1 year of surveying, and mapping experience.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Carlson Mining, SurvCAD 2D and 3D drawings and the capability of developing spreadsheets is required.
  • Experience with technical GPS systems
  • FAA – Remote Pilot of Small Unmanned Aircraft System license or the ability to obtain
  • Indiana Mine Examiners certification (or the ability to obtain certification at the first opportunity).

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to stand for 4 to 8 hours on uneven rocky surfaces.
  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours at a time.  Will be required to walk through different sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
  • Walking ability will also be judged according to the SCSR emergency evacuation plan required and approved by MSHA.
  • Must have the ability to lift 25 to 30 pounds on a frequent basis.  Must have the ability to occasionally lift items weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to bend or stoop for a full work period as a result of the mine height.
  • Must have the ability to climb on and off equipment and ladders.
  • Must have the ability to work in damp, dimly lit, and confined work areas.

 Note:  This is considered a safety sensitive role:

 Individuals in safety sensitive roles (i.e., role where impaired performance could credibly result in fatality or permanently disabling injury), cannot have:

  • an uncontrolled condition which is likely to cause loss of consciousness or ability to control a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
  • an uncontrolled respiratory or cardiac dysfunction likely to interfere with the ability to operate a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
  • a current clinical diagnosis of high blood pressure likely to interfere with ability to operate a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
  • a current or unregulated mental or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with ability to drive a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
  • impaired hearing (with or without hearing aids) that would prevent the person from hearing crucial safety information or alarms;
  • impaired vision. Individuals must meet the minimum vison requirements of at least 20/40 acuity (Snellen) with or without correction and at least 70° field of vision in horizontal meridian measured.
