About the role

The broader Financial Accounting team is responsible for the financial compliance and governance of the Peabody Australia group.  As a member of this team, the Senior Accountant, Technical and Financial Reporting is primarily responsible for all technical accounting matters of the group, whilst also contributing to the timely delivery of the IFRS statutory financial reporting process, US GAAP financial reporting and lease accounting requirements. 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Investigate accounting issues, provide technical accounting advice and prepare technical accounting memos for both US GAAP and IFRS as required
  • Proactively keeping abreast of emerging accounting matters and communicating these to the broader financial team
  • Involvement in application of lease accounting standards for both IFRS and US GAAP including contract review, maintenance of lease accounting software information, preparation of associated monthly journal entries and periodic roll forward and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Involvement in periodic impairment reviews and preparation of impairment models under both IFRS and US GAAP
  • Assist with IFRS to US GAAP differences and liaising with the broader finance team to ensure these are reconciled/updated as required
  • Provide assistance with the annual and half year IFRS statutory financial reporting process as required
  • Assisting with the accurate, efficient and timely preparation of both general purpose financial reports and management reports for a range of companies within the Australian group
  • Assist with preparing annual solvency statements and associated compliance requirements
  • Assist with ensuring full compliance and management of deed of cross guarantee, in conjunction with internal legal team
  • Liaising with internal tax team, internal legal team and external auditors
  • Provide support to the broader Financial Accounting team as required including processing journal entries, preparation of balance sheet reconciliations
  • Drive continuous improvement of processes and procedures for improved efficiency and service delivery 

The lifestyle:

 

This position is offered on a Monday to Friday basis, working from our Fortitude Valley office with working from home options.  Peabody offers flexible start / finish times and ‘redistributed working week’ giving employees flexibility to finish at noon on Friday’s.

 

About you:

 

  • Bachelor Degree in Business / Commerce / Accounting
  • Qualified Chartered Accountant (CA) or Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA)
  • Solid understanding of IFRS and US GAAP accounting standards with a detailed understanding of variances between IFRS and US GAAP, preferably as they relate to the mining industry
  • SAP experience and strong excel capabilities
  • 5 or more years post graduate experience in large accounting firms or commerce (previous mining company experience is advantageous)
  • Experience working in financial reporting and providing technical accounting advice; audit experience would be advantageous
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Understanding of internal controls and SOX requirements
  • SEC, ASX or similar public reporting experience preferrable, not essential
  • Experience working with external auditors
  • Ability to build positive working relationships across functions and locations with strong communication skills
  • Ability to question the status quo and engage in process improvement
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills to quickly and effectively resolve issues 
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to meet deadlines and thrive in a fast-paced environment
