About the role
Reporting to the Associate General Counsel – Australia, but working closely with the existing Senior Legal Counsels you will act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and project teams, delivering strategic legal advice that supports Peabody’s commercial and operational goals. This Brisbane-based role focuses on commercial law, corporate transactions, shipping, renewable energy development projects, litigation, and regulatory matters across Peabody’s Australian operations and offers the opportunity to work on high-impact matters in a dynamic resources environment.
Key responsibilities:
- Advise on complex corporate and commercial matters, acquisitions, joint ventures and renewables projects.
- Advise on competition law issues, shipping, litigation, and regulatory compliance.
- Help manage disputes and litigation.
- Manage external legal providers to ensure cost-effective, high quality outcomes.
- Assist with other legal matters as directed by the Associate General Counsel – Australia.
The lifestyle:
This position is offered on a Monday to Friday basis, working from our Fortitude Valley office with working from home options. Peabody offers flexible start / finish times and a ‘redistributed working week’ giving employees flexibility to finish at noon on Fridays.
About You:
We are looking for a pragmatic, commercially minded lawyer who thrives in a fast paced, hands on role. You will bring:
- A degree in Law with a current Queensland practising certificate.
- 5-10 years of post-qualification legal experience.
- Experience in complex corporate transactions and commercial law.
- Understanding of Australian regulatory frameworks.
- Experience in litigation and dispute resolution.
- Exposure to resources, energy, or heavy industry sectors (highly regarded).
- Experience with cross-border transactions or international commercial matters (advantageous).
- Exceptional stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence senior leaders.
- Strong business acumen, solution-focused mindset, and adaptability.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Project management skills and ownership of outcomes.
