We are currently seeking a Specialist Technical Onsite to join our team at our Shoal Creek Mine, located in Oakman, Alabama. Shoal Creek Mine is one of the deepest underground coal mines in the United States. Located on the Black Warrior River, this site produces one of the highest qualities of met coal in the United States. With nine-foot-tall workings, a brand-new longwall, and 15+ years of projected coal reserves, Shoal Creek mine is an ideal place to work.  

 

Located in between Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa counties in Alabama, this area offers beautiful rivers and lakes, landscapes, and rolling hills at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. Oakman is about an hour from Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, both of which provide diverse, family-friendly communities with something for everyone, such as vibrant downtowns, safe, friendly neighborhoods, and excellent schools, including the University of Alabama and other area colleges.

Responsibilities: 

 

This person is responsible for delivering reliable IT services across end-user computing and network support functions to meet operational and business needs. This role provides hands-on technical support at our Southeast mine locations (with some travel required), ensuring employees have efficient, dependable, and well-supported technology environments. By combining onsite technical assistance with high-level network troubleshooting and coordination, the Specialist plays a key role in maintaining system availability, supporting connectivity, and enabling safe, productive operations.

 

Duties will include:

 

  • End User Computing – Provide hands-on support for desktops, laptops, mobile devices, and related peripherals, including imaging, provisioning, and deployment of systems, to ensure reliable performance, timely issue resolution, and alignment with corporate standards
  • Network Support Assist with the configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of network infrastructure, including switches, wireless access points, and connectivity issues across surface and underground environments, coordinating with the Electrical department to restore and maintain reliable network communications
  • Incident Response & Field Support – Serve as the onsite point of contact for IT issues, responding to incidents and service requests, restoring service quickly, and documenting work performed to support operational continuity and follow-up
  • Camera Systems Management – Manage and support a fleet of 170+ cameras across surface, plant, and underground operations, including installation, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance. Work closely with operations, maintenance, and underground teams to ensure camera systems remain operational, properly positioned, and effective in supporting site visibility and operational needs
  • Technical Alignment – Implementation and support of enterprise IT systems, including hardware and software upgrades, design changes, and infrastructure improvements as planned and developed by IT authorities

Qualifications:

  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related field, or equivalent work experience
  • A minimum of two years of relevant work experience
  • Preferred Industry Recognized certifications from CompTIA, Cisco, etc
  • Must maintain a valid and current driver's license
  • Excellent written and verbal skills with the ability to collaborate with other team members, departments, and vendors
  • Exceptional organizational skills, ability to meet deadlines, thrive in a fast-paced industry and mining atmosphere, and possess advanced problem-solving capability
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

 

Experience:

  • Familiarity with IT/OT environments; experience in mining, manufacturing, or other industrial settings is a plus
  • Hands-on experience with hardware installation, cabling, and infrastructure support, including the ability to safely operate articulated boom and scissor lifts
  • Experience with fiber optic technologies, including fusion splicing and operating an OTDR for testing and troubleshooting
  • Maintain accurate inventory records for IT hardware and network assets, ensuring proper tracking, documentation, and lifecycle alignment

 

Physical requirements:

  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles
  • Must have the ability to perform office-related tasks, which may include prolonged sitting or standing
  • Must have the ability to move from place to place within an office environment
  • Must be able to use a computer
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively
  • Some positions may require occasional repetitive motion or movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Physical Requirements, Underground Occupations:
  • Must have the ability to stand for prolonged periods of time on uneven, rocky surfaces

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Must have the ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time.  Will be required to walk through different sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom
  • Walking ability will be judged according to SCSR emergency evacuation plan required and approved by MSHA
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA
  • Must have the ability to bend or stoop for a full work period as a result of mine height
  • Must have the ability to climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on and off equipment and ladders
  • Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms and legs as well as good hand to eye coordination
  • Must have the ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and the ability to occasionally lift items weighing up to 75 pounds
  • Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area

 

 

This is a Safety Sensitive Role: Individuals in safety sensitive roles (i.e., role where impaired performance could credibly result in fatality or permanently disabling injury), cannot have:

 

  • An uncontrolled condition which is likely to cause loss of consciousness or ability to control a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
  • An uncontrolled respiratory or cardiac dysfunction likely to interfere with the ability to operate a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
  • A current clinical diagnosis of high blood pressure likely to interfere with ability to operate a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
  • A current or unregulated mental or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with ability to drive a motor vehicle or other large machinery;
  • Impaired hearing (with or without hearing aids) that would prevent the person from hearing crucial safety information or alarms;
